Tourism Ufa (Russian: Уфа) is the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. Population: 1, 036, 026 (2005 est. ); 1, 042, 437 (2002 Census).
Ufa is one of the industrial centres in the Western Urals area, and is situated at the confluence of the Belaya and the Ufa Rivers. Industries include electrical and mining equipment, oil refining, petrochemicals, synthetic rubber, and processed foods. The Ufa Airport connects the city to several towns in Russia, as well as to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Germany, Turkey and Uzbekistan. There is also the smaller Ufa Maximovka Airport northeast of the city.
The city began as a fortress built on the orders of Ivan IV in 1574, and originally bore the name of the hill it stood on, Tura-Tau. The city began to be called Ufa, meaning "small" in Turkic, by locals and the name stuck. In 1802, Ufa became the principal city of Bashkiria.

The first theater in Ufa was established in 1861 under the initiative of S. Aksakova, the wife of Ufa Governor. This event started the tradition of Ufa theatrical life and became the origin of Russian Drama Theater in Bashkortostan, whose aesthetics from the very beginning was based on the traditions of Russian school of theater. The repertoire of the theater includes dramatic works of Russian and foreign authors, both classic (plays by Aristofan, W. Shakespeare, K. Goldoni, K. Gozzi, N. Gogol, A. Ostrovsky, A. Chekhov. M. Shopping On August 25, coming as the closing chapter in one of the largest investment projects to have been developed in Ufa City, the long-awaited IKEA shopping center opened its doors for customers in a suburb of Ufa, midway between the airport and the downtown. The opening ceremony was attended by Rustem Khamitov, President of Bashkortostan Republic; Per Wendschlag, General Director of IKEA Russia and CIS; Pavel Kachkaev, Head of Ufa City Municipal District Administration. The distinguished guests took part in the traditional ceremony of log sawing. As part of another tradition, the first guest to step across the threshold of the newly opened shop was a cat.
In his speech, while mentioning the difficulties associated with the development of the project, President Khamitov made a point of thanking the IKEA team for persistence in accomplishing their business goals. “And as the final result we have got this magnificent shopping center, ” President noted, speaking highly of the quality of the goods under the IKEA brand.
